Lucy McKenzie, May of Teck, (2010). Oil paint on canvas.
One of the main inspirations for this piece was once again Lucy McKenzie, with her Trompe L'oeil works such as the exercises shown above inspiring the painted wooden background in particular. I again got to see these in person at the Tate Liverpool and these are my own images that I took whilst there.

Miguel Angel Nuñez, Bag with Red Apples, (2018). Oil on canvas, 100 x 100 cm.

Miguel Angel Nuñez, Bags with Apples, (2015). Oil on canvas, 100 x 100 cm.

Miguel Angel Nuñez, Bag with Grapes on Blue Background, (2016). Oil on canvas, 73 x 92 cm.

Miguel Angel Nuñez, Bag with Three Apples, (2020). Oil on canvas, 80 x 100 cm.
Miguel Angel Nuñez's paintings of apples and grapes wrapped in cellophane also led me to think about using a similar idea and consider painting some kind of bag or wrapper that relates to crochet.

This is the organza bag that I use to store all my crocheting tools and I chose this to be the focus of the painting. This is the reference photo I used to paint the bag.

This is the reference photo I used for the wooden background. It was relatively loosely based on this, I just wanted to get an idea of the pattern. I also changed the colour slightly to make it brighter.

Judy Chicago’s feminist installation The Dinner Party is also another work that celebrates traditionally female textile arts through the intricate table runners.
